Mantra questions
How many times, why 108, and where to begin.
How many times should a mantra be chanted?
Traditionally 108 times, one round of a mala. Shorter counts of 11, 21 or 27 are also common, and a sankalp (vow) is often 1.25 lakh repetitions over many days.
Why does a mala have 108 beads?
One traditional explanation is the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) multiplied by their 4 padas: 27 × 4 = 108. The larger 109th bead, the sumeru, is not crossed.
Which mantras are chanted most often?
Among the most widely chanted are the Gayatri Mantra, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Om Namah Shivaya, the Hare Krishna maha mantra, Om Gam Ganapataye Namah and Shri Ram Jai Ram.
Can anyone chant these mantras?
Naam jap and most of the mantras here are chanted by everyone. Some traditions prefer that beej mantras are taken from a guru, so follow your family or guru's guidance.
